Appointments

Doctors’ Appointments

Standard operating hours are Monday to Friday 08:00 to 13:30 and 14:30 to 18:30

Exact appointment times and availability vary daily for specific doctors.

Online Booking - In order to book online you will first need to register in person. This is for your safety and confidentiality and ensures that it is YOU that is gaining access to YOUR medical records.

Online registration is available to all patients aged 16 or over.

Pre-Bookable Appointments

Approximately 30% of appointments are available to book in advance. The majority of these are available to book one week ahead but a limited number can be booked up to three weeks ahead.

We have found that increasing the number of pre-bookable appointments significantly increases the number of missed appointments where patients fail to attend without cancelling their appointment.

'Book On The Day' Appointments

The remaining appointments are released on the day.

We no longer provide a service to book online 'on the day' appointments. We still offer advance booking online, on the day appointments are released at 8:00am when the surgery opens.

As patients cancel unwanted appointments, they immediately become available to be booked throughout the day.

Friday PM Appointments

We do not book routine appointments on Friday afternoons; instead we run a duty-doctor service at each surgery to allow those with urgent concerns to access their GP services ahead of the weekend, which in turn relieves pressure on the local emergency services.

Nurse and Healthcare Assistant Appointments

These are available every weekday. Please check with reception for details of availability.

These appointments can be booked up to one month is advance, depending on the nature of your visit.

Training

Our practice is part of the Oxford University Medical School Training Program.

From time to time you may be asked by one of the doctors whether you would mind being seen by the students.

The students are always monitored by one of the partners.

Extended Hours Surgeries

We now offer extended hours for pre-booked consultations.

We intend that this will be helpful to our patients who are commuters or have working hours which make it difficult to access GP appointments during our regular hours.

Please be mindful of your fellow patients who may be less able to access other appointments before you book yourself into an extended hours appointment slot.

Subject to availability, extended hours appointments are available Monday through Thursday across the two surgeries.

Continuity of Care

Please Note: with a view to providing continuity of care, appointments at Hughenden Valley Surgery in High Wycombe are generally reserved for patients registered at Hughenden Valley Surgery and appointments at Chequers Drive Surgery in Prestwood are reserved for patients registered at Chequers Drive.

Occasionally you may be requested by the doctor, nurse or receptionist to attend an appointment at the other surgery for example when specific services are located at one but not both sites, or in the event that appointment availability and demand do not match on the day.

Home Visits

Whilst we encourage our patients to come to the surgery, where we have the proper equipment and facilities available, we do appreciate this is not always possible. In this respect, if you do need a home visit, you can help us by calling reception between 08:00 - 10:00.

It is only appropriate to request a home visit if you are housebound or are too ill to visit the practice.

People without their own transport are expected to make their own arrangements (for example a taxi) to come down to the surgery. Unfortunately, a lack of transport is not a reason for a home visit. Obviously there are not enough doctors in the world to visit everyone that doe snot want to pay for a taxi and this precious resource is intended for our most unwell patients.

Please bear this in mind and be prepared to provide suitable details to enable the doctor to schedule house calls.

Not all Home Visit Services are best provided by your GP

Depending on your needs you may be visited by your usual doctor, or another doctor in the practice, or by a District Community Nurse or by the Practice Community Nurse.

You may also be visited at home by a health visitor if you have recently had a baby or if you are newly registered with a GP and have a child under five years.

We work very closely with our local palliative care teams such as the Rennie Grove Hospice and there may be occasions when your Home Visit needs are better provided by a member of that team rather than your GP.

Chaperones

We are committed to providing a safe, comfortable environment where patients and staff can be confident that best practice is being followed at all times and the safety of everyone is of paramount importance.

Chaperones are available for both male and female patients.

If you would like a chaperone present at your consultation please ask, ideally at the time of booking an appointment if possible, so that arrangements can be made and the appointment is not delayed in any way. The doctor or nurse may also require a chaperone to be present for certain consultations.

All chaperones, both male and female, have undergone CRB checks for their role here within Hughenden Valley and Chequers Drive Surgeries and all have also undergone formal chaperone training.

Cancel an Appointment

It is important that you inform the reception staff if you are unable to attend your appointment, this will allow that appointment to be offered to another patient. If you fail to notify the Practice that you are unable to attend, you will be sent a letter informing you that you have defaulted from your appointment. Persistent defaulters maybe removed from the list.

You can also complete our appointment cancellation notification request form. This can only be used if your appointment has been arranged for more than 24 hours in advance. (excluding weekends and public holidays). You can also text to cancel your appointment.

Text Reminder Service

We have a texting service which allows you to receive confirmation and reminders about your appointments.

To have this service you will need to register by completing a consent form.

Please remember to update your contact details with us when you change address, telephone numbers and email address.
